The price of equality
Memorial Day brings about the solemn remainder that the price of freedom is not only about voting and lawmaking but about each citizens duty and sacrifices.
More than 1,225 Puerto Ricans have died while serving for the United States. The names of those who perished in combat are inscribed in "El Monumento de la Recordacion" -- the Monument of Remembrance -- which was unveiled May 19, 1996, and is in front of the state capital Building in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The figure is more surprising when we take into consideration that those Puerto Ricans that died in the service of the United States did so with no political clout in the halls and meetings that decided which war they were going to fight.
They are heroes that where either drafted or that volunteered to defend a democratic republic of which they serve with full faith and allegiance, while at the same time are continuedly denied any political representation in Congress or the vote for their Commander in Chief. They are in essence, Americans who are ruled without their consent. Colonial citizens in all but name.
The fight for the equal federal representation of the U.S. Citizens of the Territory of Puerto Rico is the best way to honor the sacrifices of all the brave men and women who gave it all in the name of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
El Precio de la Igualdad
El Día de los Caídos trae consigo el resto solemne de que el precio de la libertad no se trata solo de votar y legislar, sino de los deberes y sacrificios de cada ciudadano.
Más de 1,225 puertorriqueños han muerto mientras servían para los Estados Unidos. Los nombres de los que perecieron en combate están inscritos en "El Monumento de la Recordación", que fue inaugurado el 19 de mayo de 1996, frente al edificio de la capital del estado en San Juan, Puerto Rico.
La cifra es más sorprendente cuando tenemos en cuenta que aquellos puertorriqueños que murieron al servicio de Estados Unidos lo hicieron sin influencia política en los pasillos y reuniones que decidían qué guerra iban a pelear.
Son héroes que fueron reclutados o se ofrecieron voluntarios para defender una república democrática a la que sirven con plena fe y lealtad, mientras que al mismo tiempo se les niega continuamente cualquier representación política en el Congreso o el voto de su Comandante en Jefe.
En esencia, son estadounidenses que son gobernados sin su consentimiento. Ciudadanos coloniales en todo menos en el nombre.
La lucha por la representación federal equitativa de los ciudadanos estadounidenses del territorio de Puerto Rico es la mejor manera de honrar los sacrificios de todos los hombres y mujeres valientes que lo dieron todo en nombre de la vida, la libertad y la búsqueda de la felicidad.
