The public record
Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ritchie Torres, both of Puerto Rican descent, won reelection in New York’s 14th and 15th Districts, according to unofficial results reported by the Bronx Times.
NAPREC analysis
With more than 95 percent of scanners reporting on election night, Ocasio-Cortez had 90,224 votes, 66.18 percent, against Republican Diamant Hysenaj, and Torres had 92,094 votes, 76.89 percent, against Republican Stylo Sapaskis. Ocasio-Cortez’s mother was born in Puerto Rico and raised in Arecibo; Torres’s father is Puerto Rican and his mother was born in the Bronx to Puerto Rican parents. Pasquines reports that Ocasio-Cortez sits on the Energy and Commerce health subcommittee, which will be central to any fix for Puerto Rico’s Medicaid funding, and that Torres ranks 17th among Democrats on Financial Services. Ocasio-Cortez and Representative Nydia Velázquez led earlier status legislation and in 2026 opposed a status bill filed by the Resident Commissioner. Their votes, and their differences, will shape how the new majority approaches Puerto Rico.
The statehood connection
NAPREC supports equality through statehood. Puerto Rico’s residents do not have voting senators or a final House floor vote through their Resident Commissioner, and Puerto Rico does not appoint presidential electors. Admission would address that structural representation question. It would not remove the need to legislate program rules, plan a transition, or hold government accountable for results.
A question for public officials
Will New York’s Puerto Rican members join a single status bill that the House can pass again in the 120th Congress?
